Possibly The Smelliest Vid Shown On MTV

Lots of people like this song. It is one of THE classic one-hit-wonders. I'm kinda like meh... about it. What the hell is Dexy's Midnight Runners??? That's not a band name that's just a bad idea. I do slightly like the melody and it is kind of a unique song, for 80s trash. It's just a little too catchy, I've heard it about a bazillion times and I don't really get the message. "Come on Eileen"... why do we even care about Eileen? Since I've heard it way too many times and that fact has really gotten to me, I won't say much more about it.
Watching the video, it seems to be either a very Scottish or maybe Irish thing... you know, it's like kind of part of their culture. The constant overuse of denim overalls, the Gay-lick violins, the "Tu ra lu ra, tu ra lu ra ay..." that must be like an old chant that they do while their polishing their bagpipes or licking the bottoms of their bottles of Guinness- who knows. Well, who really knows about this song- maybe that's why I don't get a lot of what is going on here, what's being sung about and why they seem to want to flaunt their almost visible B.O.

K first you get all these numbers flying at you, and I'm wondering if this is the number of seconds I'll be able to stand this video, nah- 80 seconds? WAY too long. This is obviously a very very special video. And I mean the kind of special that Ralph from The Simpsons thinks he is. They're obviously just havin' a bit of fun, but I just don't quite get it. There's an attempt at style here, but it's hard for me to know what the style is trying to say about the message of the song.
I do like some of the other songs from this band. The lead woman's voice is one of my all-time favorites in music hands down- just one of those voices I could listen to all day and not get tired of. Is it just me or does she remind anyone else of Miss Yvonne from Pee Wee's Playhouse? Their other good songs include: "Deadbeat Club", "Hot Pants Explosion", "Private Idaho", "Summer Of Love", and of course the two all-time classics "Roam" and "Love Shack" but this one just doesn't grab me like the rest.

Soon Turned Out, Not A Pain In The Ass

I don't know why she keeps grimacing into the camera, but she can easily get away with it since she happens to be one of the coolest women in rock EVER. I just love how she doesn't seem to care if she looks bad momentarily. She's got a real slick attitude that's so admirable and it's just because she knows how cool she is. Too bad the band doesn't appear the same.
This is a really great classic song, as good as "Rapture", and much better than "The Tide Is High" which I thought was fun, but just ok in comparison. Everything in this song is incredibly slick, the epitome of a great 80s song. From the very beginning funky drum sequence to her edgy vocals and the intriguing instrumentation at the end, it's just a plain GREAT song.

Ewww- Girl Bands Have Cooties- Cooty Bands!

Ok, let's just HOPE they keep their lips sealed, if you know what I mean- ALL their lips. Otherwise it'll stink up the place. No, you gotta love The Bangles. Sorry, Go-Go's. Whatever. I think this song is pretty nice, anyway. It has a really good message to it. And I prefer this version much more than the Fun Boy Three Version.
The video is very early 80s, isn't it? No attempt at special effects or a clean look, just taking a camera and goofing around with it. You can tell there is an attempt at art when the video ends as the lead singer moves out of frame and the camera just sits there focused on nothing, you know, it just kinda ends in an artsy way. Which kind of demeans the rest of the video because as I say, it looks very half-assed, and unfortunately, now you know it was done by a real director.
