Great Song, Nerdy Band
This is a great song, no denying that- it will probably stand the test of time and people will probably love it in a hundred years or a thousand or more. It's definitely a classic and certainly one of the best for the band. There's something about it, maybe the guitars, that just grab you and don't let go 'til its over. It's the kind of song that seems like it would banish hatred and fear in anyone.
I can never help thinking, on the other hand, that U2 got lucky with this one. I believe this track came out on their album "Rattle And Hum" in 1988. Previously they had had success with "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and "With Or Without You" from the album "Joshua Tree", which are also two obvious classics. Long before that, they had success with "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day" -check their discography. All these songs, in chronological order, seemed to get better and better, but between them were a lot of songs which don't even deserve mention. It seems like the band worked so hard and only a few times got it right. They've always struggled. With this track it's clear they looked back on their previous successes and tried to follow the formula. Luckily it worked, but I think that deep down there's no real feeling there- they just wrote a LOT of songs and hoped a few would capture the right sappy feeling that would sell. At the end of the day, the great masses of people LOVE sappy songs, that's just a fact. It's pretty trashy, but not enough to be good-trashy. It might seem harsh, but even growing up with this music that's the impression I got, and it still hasn't changed. They're not very confident or completely competent and in a band you need both to be strong. Great song but I think the band just got lucky. As for the vid, there's barely anything artistic there at all- pretty boring unless sleazy-faced, long-haired, single-named Irish guys float your boat.
